Frequency of anal sphincter rupture at delivery in Sweden and Finland--result of difference in manual help to the baby's head. Research output: Contribution to journal › Article

In a prospective study established in 1990, anal sphincter rupture at delivery was found in 2.4% of women and 47% of these women had problems with fecal incontinence. Although less severe, fecal incontinence was also found among 45% in a comparison group without anal sphincter rupture. Rupture of the external anal sphincter occurs in about 4% percent of deliveries. It is not clear from other studies whether the results concerning anal function, e.g.

STUDY DESIGN The effectiveness of cesarean delivery in parous women with a previous anal sphincter rupture was determined by decision analysis. The outcomes were excess cesarean deliveries and morbidity and mortality rates per prevented case of anal incontinence. Thirty‐eight women with rupture of the anal sphincter occurring during childbirth were followed for 3–12 months. Nineteen had complete rupture of the external and sphincter, 14 had a lesion involving more than half of the sphincter muscle and five had a superficial rupture. The majority are superficial and may require no treatment, but severe tears can cause significant bleeding, long-term pain or dysfunction. A perineal tear is distinct from an episiotomy, in which the perineum is intentionally incised to facilitate delivery.

Rupture of the external anal sphincter occurs in about 4% percent of deliveries. It is not clear from other studies whether the results concerning anal function, e.g. fecal continence, are better with the overlap repair or end-to-end repair of the injured muscle. 2010-02-05 In a prospective study established in 1990, anal sphincter rupture at delivery was found in 2.4% of women and 47% of these women had problems with fecal incontinence. Although less severe, fecal incontinence was also found among 45% in a comparison group without anal sphincter rupture.

Study design: Fifty-one consecutive women with primarily sutured anal sphincter rupture and 31 women without anal sphincter rupture were prospectively studied after vaginal delivery. In the anal sphincter rupture group, an improvement was found over the first 3 months after delivery, but afterwards no further change occurred. The anal sphincter strength was significantly reduced compared to the control group, both soon after delivery and after 3 months. 2005-03-03 · RESULTS: Over the period in question we registered 147 ruptures of the anal sphincter among 6124 vaginal deliveries (2.4%); 109 (1.7%) were partial ruptures, 38 (0.7%) total ruptures.
